At the end, who owns the IP (intellectual property)?
The industry partner. The students must agree at the start to transfer the IP to the industry partner. See IP and NDA agreement.
What is the difference between having COOP interns and a Capstone project ?
In the COOP programme, your company hires a student, who is your full-time employee for 4 or 8 months. In the capstone project course, a group of 5 works part-time for 8 months on a problem you specify, but they are not your employees. They act a bit like a consulting firm. They report to a UBC professor supervising their work. They most likely use UBC labs and workshops.
How much do you charge the industry partner?
In 2016, still nothing. Student groups have a budget to spend on their project. In some cases, if the prototyping costs are above this budget ($650) we will ask the industry partner to purchase material (e.g., parts) or loan equipment.
