Annelies Tjebbes, a Biomedical Electrical Engineering student, discusses her involvement with the non-governmental association Engineers without Borders (EWB). Annelies, the EWB UBC Chapter President, explains EWB’s role with local projects focusing on water, sanitation and agriculture in Africa. The UBC Chapter consists of 200 volunteers and 50 active members who organize events, as well as drive the change at UBC.
Annelies volunteered overseas with EWB in the village of Bogande, in Burkina Faso, Africa. Through supporting a local women’s association, which set up a waste disposal program over 15 years ago, Annelies helped educate and garner support in the community for proper waste disposal and sanitation.
