Car club creates electric powered 1972 VW Beetle

ECE students and members of the Electric Car Club: Andrea Luk, Ricky Gu and Harshul Srivastava took a UBC Engineering tradition and gave it a twist. Every year engineering students complete a prank involving a Volkswagen Beetle. This year, ECEECC members turned a 1972 VW Beetle into an electric vehicle.

The vehicle was purchased in working condition for $2400 and construction started in October of 2009. The vehicle completed its first highway drive during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Oylmpics; helping to promote Vancouver as a “green” city. The test drive was seen as a success and inspired the ECEECC team to strive to take the “E-Beetle” across Canada. The goal was to set the record for the fastest time of the 6,400km coast-to-coast drive.

Two members to the Electric Car Club left Vancouver on August 21, 2010 and reached Halifax, Nova Scotia on September 5, 2010.
