Publications

Dr. Liao has been an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) since January 2022.
 
Before joining UBC, he was a Visiting Faculty Researcher at Google Brain. He received his Ph.D. degree in CS in 2021 from the University of Toronto. During his Ph.D., he worked as a Senior Research Scientist at Uber Advanced Technologies Group. He received an M.Phil. degree in CS in 2015 from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 2011, he received a B.Eng. degree in Automation from Beihang University. He is a recipient of RBC Graduate Fellowship and Connaught International Scholarship.
 
Dr. Liao welcomes M.Sc. and Ph.D. applications from self-motivated students with a strong background in mathematics and/or coding, and, interests in one or more of the following areas, deep learning / machine learning, computer vision, self-driving, neural language models, neural symbolic reasoning, and statistical learning theory.
