Abolmaesumi and Fels Receive National Funding for Health Research

Purang Abolmaesumi and Sidney Fels are among seven UBC researchers awarded grants from the Collaborative Health Research program (CHRP), funded jointly by NSERC and the CIHR.

Dr. Abolmaesumi’s research in biomedical technologies focuses on a 3D ultrasound imaging system for wrist fracture operations, which would allow more accurate surgery procedures and reduced radiation exposure for patients and surgical teams. For this project, Dr. Abolmaesumi was awarded $418,700.

Dr. Fels’s research, also in biomedical technologies, concentrates on 3D computer modeling for the face and jaw, which would optimize the simulation and design of head and neck surgery, surgical guides, prostheses, and implant installation. Dr. Fels received $511,000 for this research.

UBC’s seven grants are part of a $19 million investment in 37 projects announced on September 25 at McGill University by the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for Science and Technology. This investment aims to support cross-disciplinary research projects, encouraging collaboration between the natural sciences/engineering and health sciences.
