Nobuo Tanaka visits UBC’s Alpha Lab

Campus as a Living Lab

ECE was pleased to host Nobuo Tanaka, Global Associate for Energy Security and Sustainability at the Institute for Energy Economics, Japan and Professor at the Graduate School of Public Policy, University of Tokyo. 

Professor Tanaka was introduced to ECE’s commitment to research in power and energy by Professor Martin Ordonez who explained UBC’s campus as a living lab Energy Storage System project.  This project is a novel combination of Corvus Energy’s battery technology Alpha Technology’s equipment and systems.  The project infrastructure serves as a platform for advanced research in storage technology  and AC/DC systems. Professor Tanaka was joined by members of the National Research Council, BCIT and local industry representatives in energy innovation.

Prof. Tanaka was visiting Vancouver to deliver the keynote address at the Pacific Energy Innovation Association Forum and to share his perspective on Japan’s energy challenges. He has been a leader in economic and technology policy at the national and international level throughout his career. Prof. Tanaka has served as the Director for Science, Technology and Industry, OECD, as the Minister for Energy, Trade and Industry, Japanese Embassy, Washington, D.C., and  Director-General for Multilateral Trade System Department, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
