Researchers Win Best Paper at IPCAI

The ECE research team of PhD students Mohammad Najafi and Narges Afsham, Dr. Purang Abolmaesumi and Dr. Robert Rohling  won the best paper award at the International Conference on Information Processing in Computer Assisted Intervention (IPCAI)

The paper describes methods of improving the accuracy of locating 3D ultrasound images used for image-guided surgeries and procedures. Ultrasound navigation is an emerging imaging technology used in  many procedures including neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery and radiation therapy because it is real-time, relatively inexpensive and  non-invasive. By attaching a position sensor to a conventional 2D ultrasound probe, 3D images can be constructed. The main challenge of this type of imaging is to precisely locate ultrasound image with respect to sensors on the transducer.
