The Canadian Award in Telecommunications Research is a career award recognizing distinguished contributions made by an individual in Canada to research in the field of telecommunications.

Professor Bhargava’s contributions in the 1980s were on error control coding and spread spectrum communications for terrestrial, satellite and other wireless applications. The translation of this work to practice resulted in devices used by companies such as MPR Teltech, Mobile Data International, OMNEX Engineering and Bell-Northern Research. A logical continuation of this work led him to work on cellular wireless communications starting in the 1990s. He was one of the first researchers to recognize the challenges facing cellular telephony operators to integrate different types of radio access technologies and network topologies into their networks as they evolve from second generation (2G) to third generation (3G) and to fourth generation (4G) wireless systems.

Professor Bhargava’s current research interests are in the area of wireless communications, particularly in resource management of 5G networks, multi-tier cellular networks, cognitive radio, cooperative and relay-based systems, and green communications. His current work with spectrum and energy efficient fifth generation systems will likely be deployed around 2020.
