Dr. James McEwen Receives Order of Canada for Engineering

Dr. James McEwen has been named to the Order of Canada for his outstanding influence on engineering. The Order of Canada recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community, and service to the nation.

Dr. McEwen is adjunct professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Orthopedics at UBC. Dr. McEwen used his skills as a researcher, entrepreneur, and inventor to help found the Canadian biomedical engineering industry. By applying engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology, Dr. McEwen invented automatic surgical tourniquet systems, which rapidly proliferated to operating rooms across the globe. Dr. McEwen also set up the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Vancouver General Hospital. Dr. McEwen’s work continues to enhance health care and improve patient safety.
