Once a physician starts a surgical procedure they can’t touch any piece of equipment that isn’t sterile. If they want to move an X-ray film or switch an image on a computer monitor they either need an assistant or they have to take off their gloves, move the image and re-scrub. Imagine doing all that every time you wanted to touch a mouse or keypad.

This capstone team designed wireless and hands-free controls for medical imaging software in order to work around this problem. Using Leapsis, the new device the team developed, medical imaging software can be manipulated with gestures instead of touch, saving time and the cost of re-sterilization. By helping physicians stay by the bedside, the quality of care and the patient experience may also be improved.

The device senses the physician’s hand gestures and alters the view of the monitor image accordingly. Because the devise is wireless it can be placed anywhere that is convenient. Every component is packed in a single box and that box is extremely portable.
