Transfers

Students wishing to transfer programs should send an email to help@ece.ubc.ca with the details of their request. Please see below for the procedures for requesting transfers between the different ECE graduate programs:

The first formal step to request a transfer is to email help@ece.ubc.ca. Once the request is received, ECE graduate program staff will request confirmation from your supervisor that they are in support of transferring your previous credits to the new program.

A maximum of 12 credits can be transferred between the MASc and MEng programs, and only courses with a minimum of B standing (74% at UBC) will be considered for transfer between these two programs.

Before requesting a transfer from MEng to MASc, students must provide written acknowledgment from the ECE faculty member that has agreed to supervise them in the MASc program.

MASc students should speak with their supervisor first if they are considering transferring to the MEng program. Our staff will reach out to the supervisor to confirm approval once the transfer request has been made by the student.

Students who wish to transfer from the MASc to the PhD program must have completed one year of study in the MASc program with:
· minimum of 18 credits
· minimum 80% average in 12 credits
· at least 9 of these credits must be at the 500 level or above
· at least 9 credits must be at 80% or above
· successful completion of a Ph.D. Qualifying Exam

Transfer directly into the PhD program should be accomplished after the first year of study and will not be permitted after the completion of the second year in the MASc program. Transfers can not be retroactive. Included in the transfer request, our Graduate Program staff will need to receive a clear justification from the student’s supervisor to include in the transfer request package for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies to approve.

If a student transfers from the MASc to the PhD without completing the Master’s degree, the commencement of the Ph.D. program will be from the date of first registration in the Master’s program.

Further information on transferring to a Ph.D. program is available on the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website.

Transfers from PhD to a Master’s program should not be for academic reasons, but rather must be justified on the appropriateness of a student’s personal or professional goals. Requests will need to be submitted to help@ece.ubc.ca, and approval/support from the student's supervisor will be requested.

Further information on transferring from a Ph.D. program is available on the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website.

Students requesting a transfer to or from another department should first discuss the details with their supervisor and then reach out to help@ece.ubc.ca to inform their graduate program of their desire to transfer departments.

Further information on transferring from a Ph.D. program is available on the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website.
